British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
